Getting Started on Foundry
A high‑level guide to launching training for the first time
This guide outlines the key steps to launch training on Foundry for the first time. It’s designed to help you understand what needs to happen and in what order, without getting into detailed configuration steps.
Before you begin, we recommend sharing the IT Checklist with your organization’s IT team to prepare for implementation.
Platform integrations (if applicable)
If your organization licensed a technical integration (such as SSO or SCORM), additional steps may be required. Start this process as early as possible to allow time for IT coordination and testing before launch.
1. Configure your account
Create locations
Locations represent physical addresses and are used to:
- Display applicable state or jurisdiction‑specific legal content
- Target assignments
- Associate policies and resources
- Filter reports
Some locations may already be preloaded when your account is created.
Add custom categories
Custom Categories help organize learners and data beyond locations.
Common examples include:
- Department
- Employee type
- Year hired
- Matriculation year
Set up categories and labels before uploading users so learners can be classified correctly at upload. If you’re unsure what structure to use, your Account Manager can recommend best practices.
2. Add your users
Users must be added before training can be assigned.
You can:
- Add users individually, or
- Upload users in bulk using the upload template
If you created Custom Categories, you can assign Custom Labels to learners during the upload process.
3. Customize your courses
Foundry courses support configuration to align content with your organization’s branding, messaging, policies, and resources.
Configuration options vary by course, but at a minimum, we recommend:
- Adding organizational policies
- Linking relevant internal resources
Review course configurations before assigning training.
4. Plan your communication strategy
Foundry automatically sends:
- Invitations when assignments begin
- Reminder emails until learners complete training
Administrators can customize:
- Invitation and reminder messaging
- Reminder cadence per assignment
Decide on your communication approach before launch to ensure learners understand expectations and deadlines.
5. Test before launch
Before assigning training to learners, create a test assignment for yourself using the same settings you plan to use for your live assignment.
During testing:
- Confirm invitation emails are received
- Access the course as a learner
- Make progress to understand the learner experience
Once testing is complete, archive the test assignment to remove it from your dashboard.
6. Launch your training
When you’re ready to launch, create your live assignment and define:
- Assignment type
- Course(s) to assign
- Learners to include
- Invitation and reminder messages
- Start and due dates
After the assignment starts, track progress from the assignment page or through reports.
SCORM integration: quick start overview
If your organization uses SCORM, setup follows a slightly different flow.
1. Configure your Foundry account
- Create locations
- Configure courses with required policies and resources
2. Create and download your SCORM packages
If you are a SCORM Administrator, you can create and download SCORM packages directly from Foundry.
If not, follow internal guidance to obtain your SCORM packages.
To ensure compatibility, confirm whether your LMS or HRIS supports:
- SCORM 1.2, or
- SCORM 2004 (3rd Edition)
3. Launch from your LMS or HRIS
After uploading the SCORM packages to your LMS or HRIS:
- Create assignments in your LMS or HRIS
- Manage learners and assignments directly from that system going forward
